Raytheon Quadcopter Challenge is a partnership between ourselves Raytheon UK. The programme sees STEM Ambassadors from Raytheon UK deliver lessons in classrooms to second year pupils, on a wide variety of engineering topics bringing contextualised learning to young people.
The Challenge culminated in the young teams building a quadcopter which they then flew through an obstacle course.
There was a Fife Final held where all teams competed against one another and the winner represented Fife in the UK Final in Harlow.
Raytheon UK are a large employer in Fife and contribute greatly to the local economy. They work closely with the Economic Development team. An educational program was held in their UK head office in Harlow during 2015 and was extended to the rest of the UK. Glenrothes contacted us to see if it would be on interest for Fife.
The project has clear links to the STEAM agenda (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) so a partnership with ourselves and the Education team was created to project manage the programme.
The lessons were coordinated with the school, with the Fife Final organised by the central team.
The programme supports the outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence and Developing the Young Workforce. In particular, it focuses on: Technologies, Mathematics, Sciences, Literacy, Expressive Arts, Social Sciences and Health & Wellbeing.
The feedback was extremely positive with benefit being gained through industry experts delivering lessons supported by teachers.
Discussions are underway to continue the programme in years to come, but it is owned by Raytheon UK.
