The DHT, Elspeth Mosher, agreed to become a part of the pilot with Curriculo.

In total Cumbernauld Primary have 64 P7 (11/12yr olds) pupils split between two classes and two class teachers - Mrs Lynn Wares and Miss Maxine Cameron.

Elspeth, Lynn and Maxine were happy that the subject matter 'introducing skills for work' and the Curriculo Competition would fit well with the previous work of the class and agreed that following an introductory session from Curriculo, the teachers would carry out the tasks within the Curriculo Competition over two half days.

How it developed

Normally the Curriculo programme would be delivered over a three year period with a series of lessons during P5 and P6 prior to undertaking the Curriculo Competition in P7. However, in May this year the DHT and P7 teachers decided to roll out the competition following a session which would set the scene for the pupils. This seemed to work well in most schools.

The timeframe for completion was very tight but the teaching staff agreed that their pupils would benefit from the sessions and the subject matter. All Curriculo materials for the 'Scotland's Enterprising Schools Pilot' were downloaded onto the teachers' computers in class.

At this point we also decided to support the teachers with the first of the two half day sessions. All five tasks of the competition were completed and on the 23rd June the winning teams and the class teachers were presented with their Curriculo certificates and a school poster.

Outcomes and what pupils gained

This Curriculo pilot was completed in a very short timeframe and feedback from both teachers and pupils was very good.

55 pupils completed the evaluation survey.

From the Evaluation survey pupils reported the following:

a) When asked if they enjoyed the Curriculo Competition

90% of the 55 students (50/55) answered that they either enjoyed or really enjoyed the Curriculo Competition.

b) Did the programme improve your understanding of your own skills and strengths?

52/55 pupils (94%) said that their understanding had improved to some extent.

c) Did the programme improve your understanding of the skills and qualities employers look for in employees?

98% responded positively

d) Finally when asked if the programme had improved their confidence

38/55 or 86% of pupils said that it had improved their confidence.

Comments from the teachers:

Both P7 teachers rated the content, materials and the competitive element as 'very good'.

When asked: what impact did this programme have on your pupils? The class teachers responded:

"The children in my class thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I particularly found more reluctant learners responded very well to the active nature of the tasks. The resources were clear. The skills log helped to ensure all children had time to reflect and take a role in the group."

"Children are more aware of skills needed for different jobs."

This was one of six primary schools and one secondary school within a North Lanarkshire Council cluster who took part in the Curriculo pilot.
