What is your role?

I am currently a PGDE student at the University of Strathclyde.

Key Facts

I made the resource towards a generic chemistry theme to allow any year group to play using the same game pack. All that is needed to differentiate between a BGE classes and higher for example would be question sets.

The game can be played with any size of group from two students or more but I have made 5 game packs to get myself started(sciences classes usually 20 students so will have 4 students in a group)

The key focus is science but there are also chances to work on numeracy, literacy and health and wellbeing skills such as money management and communication.

How Did the Project Develop?

Lockdown! Due to having lots of free time out-with my part time job in Pharmacy instead of binge-watching Netflix series I thought I'd spend some time making resources for when I eventually get into school and have my own classes. I sat with an actual monopoly board and just played around on PowerPoint for a bit to put it together.

Whilst I was on placement in West Calder High School, I had a really quiet National 5 class who I struggled to get consistent participation from (only a few would answer questions or share ideas when asked) so when it came round to revision of a key area, I made an interactive team game called "'Play your cards right" and they absolutely loved it. Every single student in the class answered a question that day and they requested we played the game again!

I think as a teacher, I would like to focus on keeping my lessons fun and enjoyable but still highly informative and educational. In the short time I have been in school I have seen students respond far better to interactive and exciting lessons rather than the standard chalk and talk so I thought turning a game they will all have heard of educational would be a bit of fun for them!

What could pupils gain from taking part in the project?

I plan on using the game as a revision tool with all year groups in hope it helps them build confidence for assessments. It will also keep revision a bit more fun and hopefully encourage all learners to study for their assessments! Hopefully higher motivation to study will increase results for all involved as well.

Is the project sustainable? How do you see it developing in the future?

I laminated all the game pieces so they can be reused over and over. I left the Buy it and Land on questions separate and generic to allow the same 'game pack' to be paired up with question packed depending on what lesson the game is being used in.

Did you incur any costs?

Not really- I had most of what I needed already at home: laptop, paper, printer and laminator/laminating pouches. I will at some point need to purchase dice and counters for playing the game though.

Do you have any advice for practitioners thinking about organising something similar?

The time that goes into making resources pays off- once you have it you have it forever. I particularly like to try new ideas but not 'reinvent the wheel' such as creating games like this but using past exam questions as the question cards for the game.
